A birthday book where the birthday kid is the main character
The things a kid is obsessed with at five are gone by seven. A birthday is the one day a year that version of them is easy to pin down, and a book is one of the few presents that can hold it.

Why a book holds a birthday well
A birthday marks a version of a child that lasts about a year. The obsession, the mispronounced word, the thing they insist on wearing. Most presents are for the child; a book made from those details is a record of who they were when they turned this age.
It also survives the pile. Toys given at four are gone by six. A book that has their name in the story tends to stay on the shelf, and gets pulled out again by the kid who wants to hear about themselves.
Three details that make it sound like them
You type these into the payment page. None of them need to be polished, and specific beats complete every time.
- DETAIL 1
What they're into right now
Diggers, a specific dinosaur, the neighbor's cat, one song on repeat. Be as narrow as you can. "Animals" gives us a zoo; "the brown horse at the farm we visit" gives us a character.
- DETAIL 2
What they're wary of
The dark hallway, the vacuum, the deep end, going first. A story needs something the hero has to get past, and using the real one is what makes a kid sit up. It gets resolved by the end.
- DETAIL 3
The thing they say
The mispronounced word nobody in the family has corrected, the phrase they repeat at dinner, the name they gave a stuffed animal. This is the detail people read out loud twice.
Anything else you add gets used if it fits the story. The age matters too, because a book for a three-year-old and a book for an eight-year-old are paced differently.
Working backwards from the date
The clock starts when your photos arrive, not when you pay. From there it's 7 business days, and if we can't make that we refund you in full without being asked. Business days aren't calendar days: 7 of them land nine to eleven days later on a calendar once a weekend falls in the middle, and later again around a public holiday. Count in calendar days when you work backwards from the party.
- Two weeks out — no pressure at all. Order, send the photos the same day, and it's done well before the party.
- Twelve days out — about the floor, and only if the photos go out the day you pay. Anything that delays them by a day delays the book by a day.
- Closer than that — email info@kater.jp before you pay and say what the date is. If we can't be sure, we'd rather tell you than take the money.
Nothing is shipped, so there's no carrier to miss. The finished book lands in the inbox you paid from, and you can print it at home the night before if you want a physical thing to hand over.
What this isn't
It's a 24-page picture book written for one child, delivered as a print-ready PDF for $9.99. Being clear about the edges of that:
- No book arrives in the mail. We print and bind hardcovers in Japan, but we don't ship printed books abroad yet. What you get is the file, and it's yours to print as often as you like.
- The first draft is AI. An editor then rewrites the story so it reads well out loud and throws out art that came out wrong. Nothing reaches you that a person hasn't read.
- It's written for ages 3 to 8. Younger than that and they're being read to rather than following the story; older and they've usually moved past picture books.
If something's wrong with it
Reply to the delivery email and say what's off — a name spelled the other way, a page whose art missed, a detail we got backwards. We redo it. If it still isn't a book you'd want to read to them, we refund you.
How ordering works
Three steps, and only the first one happens on this site.
- You pay $9.99 and tell us the child's name, age and whatever you want in the story on the payment page.
- You email two or three photos of them to info@kater.jp from the address you paid with. There's no upload form here.
- The finished book comes back to that address as a print-ready PDF within 7 business days. If we miss that, you get a full refund without asking.
One thing worth knowing before you count backwards from a date: we're in Japan, so business days here are Japanese weekdays. Weekends and Japanese public holidays don't count, and they don't fall on the same days as yours. How the 7 days are counted is written out on the refund page. If your date is tight, email us before you pay and we'll tell you whether it fits.
